Monthly Record Rewind: January 2010
Haven't done one of these in over 6 months... time to step it up. Since Mission of Burma are playing tonight and tomorrow here in NYC, i'll run with that.
signal, calls, and marches (a reissue of signals, calls and marches ep, vs., and the horrible truth about burma (including bonus material)
when speaking in regards to post-punk, everyone knows their pil and gang of four. unfortunately not many acknowledge mission of burma, at least not by the music "experts" i'm usually surrounded with (their claim of post-punk knowledge is very expressed, so far as to think post-rock is the same genre. post-rock happened in the 90's people...). anyhow...
as popular as they were in their hometown of boston, they really didnt fit into that whole post-punk scene of the hardcore (black flag and hüsker dü), the heavy bass driven (pil and joy division), nor the nyc no-waver bands.
they were very anthemic and focused more on rocking out, than being far too idealistic or idiosyncratic like many bands did (do) to distinguish themselves.
perhaps that's their allure. mission of burma have remained unaffected by the passing of time and trends. they have firmly stood their ground, poignantly, without arrogance, and with a fair degree of pride.
my favorite tracks are "academy fight song" and "that's when i reach for my revolver" but another notable track is "max ernst." The band veers seamlessly from off-kilter beats, dissonant and jangly guitar to off-key chords and rhythms the song ends with the chantting "dada!!" and you clearly grasp the inflection.
here's that track for your listening pleasure---> mission of burma "max ernst"
or not.
